The North Edinburgh Community Safety Panel objectives are to support and promote initiatives which enhance the safety of all people living and working in the area. Working with Lothian & Borders Police, other agencies and community groups, the panel aims to promote schemes that:
-
Reduce crime and address the causes of crime
-
Develop and promote good community relationships for all
-
Improve community facilities and resources
The Panel's membership is made up of volunteers from the community and officers from Lothian & Borders Police. They are committed to developing long term initiatives that make North Edinburgh a safe and pleasant area for living, working and enjoying leisure activities.
This web site is designed to provide useful information about the activities of the Panel, activities in the area, safety and crime prevention information and other information about the area.
Information is also provided about retail, business and community groups in the area.
The Panel was formed in 2004 from two Crime Prevention Panels that have a long history of crime prevention and community safety work over the years. When the police divisions that covered North West Edinburgh and Leith were amalgamated to form the North Edinburgh Sub-Division, the North West Edinburgh and the Leith & Newhaven crime prevention panels merged. The new name, the North Edinburgh Community Safety panel was adopted in 2008 to reflect both the geographical area and the wider role of the Panel, recognising that crime prevention is an integral part of Community Safety.
Northern Edinburgh Community Safety Panel“It is only when people are given and take ownership of community matters that the successful and ongoing development of our communities can flourish through the care and responsibility of all community members.”
The name of the panel 'Northern Edinburgh Community Safety Panel' is used to reflect the area covered by the Police Division.
Basic Strategy
We are able to react to and provide support for projects aimed at problems identified from time to time and are of a transient nature, also we can develop longer term projects that have a degree of permanency in the community and in which the Panel can play the role of being a facilitator. By pursuing both types of project, the Panel will be able to play a role in improving community safety, the quality of life in the community and fostering better relationships between the police and the public at large.
Initially, three groups within the community have been identified where community safety projects might be promoted both in the long and short term. They are
1. Youth – provision of facilities and activities to develop self awareness, community responsibility and social events.
2. Elderly – provision of facilities to ensure elderly are safe and secure, have social interaction and are able to live without fear of crime.
3. Ethnic Minorities – the promotion of social mixing, development of cross-cultural events and the breakdown of social barriers that separate groups by colour, religion or ethnic grouping.
Other groups/subjects and areas of activity are being identified. They will include schools, colleges, businesses, churches (all faiths), voluntary groups, the built environment and others.
“The work of the Community Safety Panel is not about preventing or solving crime, the Panel’s work is about helping to make our community a safe place for all where crime is not an issue.”
